Nah not possible nowadays. Do you know how much land and how much work you have to dedicate to growing to sustain yourself and your family for a whole year? Well I do my family used to do that it's literally every day work either getting rid of weeds or pests just to have your whole crop destroyed by some sickness because you didn't spray it with that one exact chemical. It's nice to grow your own tomatoes or herbs or peppers to have some nice variety in your kitchen a few times of year but actually living only from garden is hard as hell.

I thought the entire point of permaculture was to let the land do the work for you. The one straw revolution was all about getting larger yields by maintaining earth's natural balance

Hoping that the land will do the work for you is like hoping you win lottery so you have something to eat in winter. I have seen entire fields of potatoes eaten by these fuckers in a matter of days weeks max if left unchecked. With enough food they basically multiply exponentially and they don't migrate unless they need new source. And that is just one example take in account countless sicknesses or just random hail basically shredding all your plants and you end up starving.

Sigh you guys I am not trying to be a smart ass or something but have you ever tried to grow something in actual field not in containers? I made one example what about 4 different kinds of rot disease when we are only talking about potatoes for easier discussion or blight its sad but it's not possible to feed yourself with only hopes it will not destroy your entire crop. Yes chemicals are bad but without them we would not have a chance to sustain our food production. Just look how some new disease is currently destroying whole banana plantages. Imagine having seasons without single orange or melons or any fruit you love. We need to sustain variety in our diets and we can't sustain it without help of different protective agents. Yes some chemicals needs to be banned glyposphate for example but don't tell me that soapy water is miraculous remedy.

It's good to have a general knowledge, even if that's not what you intend to specialize in
