Most of sapient existence has been without the institution of religion, which is only about as old as agriculture. Certainly the hunter-gatherers had some sort of beliefs in the realm of the spiritual, but they had no institutions like religion as they had no need of them in their highly egalitarian existence in a sparsely populated world.

It isn't built into humans per se, but it has been with us for a very long time and its safe to say that human beings have certain tendencies and which make them more disposed to religion and religious beliefs/behaviors.

One of the most insightful things Richard Carrier ever argued was that human beings don't have to give up the shared cultural touchstones and moral parables offered by stories when they give up religion. Mass media has already supplanted religion in a lot of ways by offering secular alternatives to fulfill these roles. Humans have evolved to need an spiritual belief system. Maybe it is because the guys who buried their dead kicked the shit out of the guys who did not, who knows, maybe it is an evolutionary advantage. Although I do agree that there is a higher power I do not necessarily believe in any of the major religions regarding a higher figure or a god. The most broken down and fundamental rules that govern reality cannot be further reversed engineered; it is the work of a higher entity.

Religion is not adequately addressing the spiritual needs of people, its a drug to cope with the misery of life in what is essentially a human cattle yard. I don't regard religion in a value-neutral way. I see it as bad. Its spiritual heroin, and its pervasiveness is not due to its ability to meet human needs but because of its utility for power.
