Repesado is what I use for basically everything, especially a classic margaritca/shots, since it's smoother and less harsh than unaged, less its a very nice blanco.

That said, learn to mix 1) drinks that are delicious as hell to you (some people love whiskey, therefore whiskey sours/manhattens/old fashioned, some people love rum therefore daquiris, etc.).
For partners coming over, learn what is a lowest common denominator. Learn what is delicious as hell to most people. Tiki shit is best for this. Jungle bird is my 100% go to. Liquid Marijuana is amazing,a really good long island ice tea is standard. Figure out what your date likes (I've had dates who love straight whiskey, easy enough, to dates who only want fruity shit that will get them super wasted).

NC here. Good solid 100% agave tequila. I like Hornitos myself for general tequila, but this stuff always calls to me.
It's not hard - lots of recipes out there. The biggest thing I find is to use fresh fruit and make your own simple syrup.

Ok, I'm just a home bartender. But my advice is to see what drinks you like at bars then try to make them at home. And just go from there. Death and Co was my first bartending book and it helped
