a few reasons this has occurred. first, and foremost, is the rise of cable news. in particular, fox news, which is a blatant republican shill network. fox news presents the 'news' through the lens of fear and hate, which keeps their audience captive. secondly, the republican party has their propaganda operation on fucking point. regardless of what happens, republicans will vote for republicans, not because of their ideals, or their record, but because of 'liberal hatred'. its a god damn cult.
there are other reasons, ( outside foreign influence, identity politics, etc ). don't think your country is immune to this. similar things seem to be happening in britain, and else where in the world. stay vigilante my brother.

It's a hero-worship thing... everyone votes for the person they wish they could be.
Republicans generally wish they were rich so they idolized the rich. This is also a weird artifact of Puritanism where in the attainment of wealth is evidence that God loves you, so everyone should want to be rich.
Of course, they don't pay attention to the sins that some of the rich (Trump, Trump's dad, etc.) have committed in order to become wealthy.
This is also why their ultimate argument usually devolves to, "U mad? u jelli!"
