Civil engineer here. Steel has worse resistance to fire than wood. While wood burns it is still able to bear load for reasonable amount of time. Meanwhile, steel doesn't burn, but when exposed to heat of fire it dramatically loses its strenght almost immediately.

Near the park where I live there's a monument to 9/11. The steel there is only a few inches wide. Nowhere near enough the size needed for structural integrity.
