I was mostly looking at regular costuming websites or, barring that, taking all of the measurements for the doll when I get her and sending them off to a professional costumer (I can't sew do to nerve damage in my fingers that can't hold most objects unless they are pinned between my thumb and ring finger)

TPE is generally softer and most say feels better, but tears easier and requires additional maintenance.

Silicone has better detailing and needs less maintenance as well as being easier to repair for small tears, but is generally firmer and more expensive.

i would get a white bodysuit while your at it, spandex likes to bleed on TPE. ill probably be hunting for suits soonish myself too.

That's "TPE." It stands for thermoplastic elastomer.

Basically, silicone is exactly what you'd expect: crosslinked silicon-based elastomer. It's heat-resistant, pretty durable, fairly easy to repair, odorless if it's done right, and inert. But, it's also relatively expensive, relatively heavy, relatively hard, and often doesn't really feel all that much like actual skin.

TPE is... well, nobody really knows precisely what it is. Probably every cook has a recipe. Broadly speaking, they're foams made of Mystery Polymer. They're much less expensive, very soft, feel awesome and often much more "real," and did I mention much less expensive? However, TPE tends to be less durable, requires a lot of ongoing maintenance (oiling it regularly), can have a smell and/or leach oil into your bedding, and by all accounts is a colossal pain in the ass to repair. There's a hell of a lot more variety available, though.

stretchy/spandex material is also a huge pain in the ass to sew. as long as it fits well it doesnt neeed to be spandex though, so stretchy cotton or jersey knit stuff should be fine if it can be found.

Well, if you're not totally sure you're going to be happy having a doll, spending less money up front might be wise. Also, if you don't like the way it feels, spending more money for something more durable may be pointless is you're not going to be happy with it. And whether it lasts longer can easily depend on how you treat it. It's really not that simple.

Dolls in moderately good condition have a surprising resale value. Yeah, I think that's gross, too, but someone will almost certainly take it off your hands. For free, at least. Otherwise... well, there's really no non-unsettling answer to the question of disposal, especially if you're the sort of person to get attached.
