When did Yea Forums stop being fun? I’ve been here since around 2008 and I often think back wonder when was the exact point that Yea Forums shifted from being primarily a humor site to some sort of far right political forum. What caused this?
Yes, this place has always been vulgar, racist, misogynist and everything else it is accused of, but it was never attached to some political ethos. There used to be a sense of fun attached and irreverence attached to those things. Yea Forums and Yea Forums in particular were compelling because they were funny and entertaining in ways that other venues could never be. And I’m not simply saying that the humor has changed, but that now there seems to be little if any humor left at all. If there is humor it overwhelmingly tends to be political in nature. It’s not about having fun, it’s about owning the libs or some such shit. This seems be the case on every board. Yea Forums doesn’t want to talk movies unless it is to shine a light on some kind of Jewish conspiracy or trannies or something. Yea Forums has collapsed mostly into porn and if there’s any discussion going on, it’s usually about /pol/faggotry. Shits fucked and gay

Didn’t used to be that way. PC culture has always been around in one form or another and that has always been a part of the left’s domain, but it wasn’t until the last decade or so that it became a militant means of suppressing speech. Prior to that the right was far more concerned with blocking free speech, but in different ways. Whereas the left restrictions on speech operate the auspices of protect disadvantaged peoples, the right was more concerned with protecting people (particularly kids) from vulgarity or immorality. That’s how things like the MPAA, the Comics Code, and the FCC were established. That’s what led artists like Marilyn Manson and Eminem and all the other boogeymen who made music for the purpose of pissing off parents. The culture has kind of moved away from that now and we don’t really have anything like that anymore. But yes, free speech being a right wing talking point is very odd to see having grown up in a completely different era.

There may be a handful of ancientfags that have been here since the early days, but most people from that era have grown up and moved on with their lives. Every generation is going to play by its own rules and so obviously things are going to change.
The bigger concern is why has the SPIRIT of Yea Forums changed so dramatically, and there are many answers to that question. First, the cultural landscape of the Internet itself has changed. Back in the aughts, Yea Forums was essentially the face of Internet counterculture. It was the only place like it and it didn’t really have any competition, and that led to a greater diversity of users. There were legitimate racists here back then, but they were only one small group of fish in a much larger pond. There were conservatives, the were liberals, there were sociopaths and anarchists and pedophiles and every other kind of shitty person and they all came together to form this sort of chaotic neutral environment. As time went on, more and more forums that had a similar vibe, rebbit being the most obvious among them. red dit in particular appealed to a certain kind of Yea Forums user, the more moderate kind. Eventually it became the new face of Internet counterculture, but the more extreme types of Yea Forums users weren’t accepted there due to its stricter restrictions. Yea Forums was the only place those people could go.
As reddit started to become more SJWy and a tumblr popped up and became a cesspit of batshit identity politics driven insanity and the Internet began to reform itself in their image, it gave the people left on Yea Forums a new enemy to hate. Now instead of harassing random camwhores like boxxy and Jessi Slaughter, Yea Forums had a much larger and more ever present target, and the creation of /pol/ supercharged that process because now there was a board where the anti-SJWs could congregate and focus solely on that issue

Instead of, “Jurassic World is racist because Chris Pratt looks tanner than usual”, you get arguments like, “Jews put a black guy in Star Wars because they are trying to eliminate the white race by cross breading them out of existence”. Yea Forums and tumblr are two sides of the same shitty coin.
