In my life I've encountered people who have been unintelligent, yes- I've encountered my share of people who suffered from mental disabilities. People with downs syndrome, autism, and so on. However, I have never once encounted somehow so stupid as to be capable of thinking something so unbelievably off-base. I didn't even think it possible that anyone in our plain of existence could ever even have the capacity for this level of idiocy

I agree with this even if I dislike the series. It deserves some praise for being one of the first serious anime, but it doesn’t hold up to modern standards.

D-dude you just don't get it because it's so deep, and philosophical. It has symbolism and metaphors and it's very deep. The scene where Shinji masturbates over Asuka's comatose body is the best because it's a deep allegorical metaphor you just need a very high IQ to understand it.

Wasn't even the first serious anime. What it was, was the first shounen anime to have both some modicum of depth and fanservice. It'd never been coupled quite like that before and the Freudian sexual themes appeal to angsty teens

Asuka is a metaphor for Gainax's fans, Shinji masturbating on her represents Gainax from Evangelion forward.

I would absolutely agree that it was a highly influential anime. Still doesn't mean it's any good.
The only thing I truly don't understand is the very ending of The end of evangelion. where Shinji is attempting to choke out asuka for (the second time?) she taps him and he stops then she just says "disgusting"
