Electric cars have been around since the 1890s. Elon had fuck all to do with other car companies now making electric cars. Better battery technology, the rising cost of fuel and governments banning the sale of new gas/diesel vehicles in 10-30 years made other car companies make electric cars.

A friends Jaguar XJ (2016 inservice date) had an electric fire that India knew of but didn't think could happen. It was from the prior year facelift of headlights and cameras and shit. Car caught fire on the highway at 70mph with no driver interaction triggering it and ended up with a very small explosion a few minutes into the fire (full tank of gas not really something that goes boom). Literally no one cared except him and his lawyer. Jaguar settled out of court a year later and did a bulletin for the car.

This is a half truth. The issue is making the battery removable and having every moron do it. For a long time an idea was electric cars, every one of them, to be able to drive into an automated drivethrough and have the battery swapped instead of recharged. It would be a small fee for people that need to drive all day without recharge time. It works in theory but making certain things fixable means making idiots capable of destroying them and blaming others.

Just about every manufacturer over the last 120 years has attempted to make an electric car for the masses at least once a decade with all of them failing because of poor milage, high cost and the batteries not holding charge after very little use. Now that the battery technology has improved to a point where they can make a brand new electric car for the same price as a reasonably spec'd Ford Focus, other manufacturers are jumping onboard the electric bandwagon. And no, Teslas aren't the reason why battery technology has improved. That's because of cell phones, tablet computers and laptops.
