The point of the gold standard wasn't to achieve perfect stability, it was to limit the ability of government to create its own money. it was on this basis that the us dollar was elevated as the world's reserve currency. however, soon afterward, the gold standard was ditched, and the us government has been limited from creating its own money only by its own self-imposed rules.
Rather than bailing out failed banks and trying to prevent recessions, the government needs to allow companies to fail and allow recession to happen (part of the natural economic cycle). stop quantitative easing (money printing), stop asset inflation, and allow interest rates to rise. Higher interest rates will discourage borrowing and spending, and encourage personal savings. We must restart non-debt financed capital investment in this country - the true engine of a productive, sustainable economy.
As time passes the distortions created by a centrally planned economy become more apparent, as assets continuously inflate and the country becomes mired in debt, it also becomes less and less competitive with the rest of the world. Additionally, the increased risk from our massively increased national debt calls into question the overall solvency of the currency, and we are already seeing other countries (our lenders) begin to move away from the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.
Once the crisis of confidence peaks, and the dollar loses its international reserve currency status... it's game over.

It's multivariabled. Think of that reward. What if going into the test you're over confident in yourself and the reward of affirming yourself is better to you than $10? It'll skew your results upward.

That said, it's possible that TOO MUCH capitalism can lower the bar a bit, but since in a capitalistic society you need to by definition keep people fat and happy and prosperous enough to support a consumatory lifestyle, even if you have a gargantuan divide between the rich and the poor, then it would STILL probably measure on the superior side compared to any nation with a state-run and enforced economic system. The problem there isn't that people would be poor, the problem there is that people will be poor COMPARED TO THE RICH. Absolute poverty would be nonexistent, but the JEALOUSY of small-minded and ungrateful people would result in demands that the resources of the wealthy, largely earned through common purchasing decisions and not through any maliciousness or malfeasance on the part of the wealthy, be given to them for no reason.
There's a phenomenon that explains why rich nations with a large divide between rich and poor have more social unrest than poor nations where literally everyone is poor. It's called the Gini coefficient. The higher the gini coefficient, the more people murder each other over a perceived unfairness.
