Cold turkey. OP, it's hell, but it's the only way to do it. If you can make 48 hours, you can make a week. If you can make a week, then you can manage a month. Those first 48 hours are pure hell. Your mind will play games with you..."just one last one" etc.
For me, cutting down just didn't work. Oh, and if you ever decide to have another smoke 3 months or 6 months or even 5 years later, just cos...well, you'll be back to a pack a day within a week. (I've been there).

You have to accept that you are a life long addict. Quitting smoking is a life long journey. Even if you haven't smoked for 20 years you are still an adfict, 1 cigarette away from being a smoker again.
The second week is the hardest. You're still motivated day 1 and 2. Second week you still have cravings and it feels like you'll feel this way forever and you crack. OP plan for that too. No one ever mentions it.

I've smoked for over 20 years and now i've stopped for over 4 years. HOw?.. went to the doctor and the lungs x-ray came out that my lungs were getting a bit 'cloudy' so the doctor told me that if i did not stop e would have to prescribe me oxygen for me to sleep in a coupple of years. LAst cigarrete i smoke was the one prior to entering the doctor's office that day. A year after stopping.. the xray shows that my lungs are back to normal. And to be honest.. i feel so much better.
Here's a coupple of thoughts that helped me endure the quitting:
1. IF i get stranded in a remote island for a month and there is no tobacco… i'll have to stop and i won't die isn't it?.. just pretend that then.
2. Be honest with yourself and akwnoledge that you don't really like smoking.. you're hooked to it.. proof 1: you say these same words to yourself many times during the day… proof 2: you freak out with yourself many times at night trying to to sleep and you can't because you can't breathe right and you say 'i«ll have to stop this shit!'
3. Why did I waited until the doctor gave me a big scare to stop this madness??
4. Every time you see someone smoking… instead of thinking how good (you think) it is.. think about all the coughing and how bad it really made you feel. it only takes a few second of this thought.

I finally had enough of losing all my strength and willpower and killing myself. But I kept failing.
I made a list of pros and cons. Looked up statistics and info online. Also looked at what caused me to relapse. Decided to plant a mental seed that when i had a shitty day i wouldnt say fuck it and smoke again. I had to be prepared. Also quitting cold turkey is the best way. Cravings will get less and less over time like over years. But the longer you go the easier it gets. Goodluck. I hope you succeed saving your own life.

Not true. 40+ year smoker. After failing to quit several times, I realized I wasn't going to make it cold turkey. There was always that one craving that made me break down and buy a pack "for just one smoke". Instead kept an emergency pack handy. I held out until the cravings overwhelmed me, then had 2-3 puffs (each cig lasting several failures). Wasn't enough to satisfy, but it got me moving again.
At first I broke down every 2-3 days. As time went on the incidences went down. My last break being about 2 years ago. But I still have my emergency pack just in case.
The key is to not break for every craving, only when it's truly overwhelming. And not to fully satisfy, but just take the edge off.
You have to actually want to quit and you quit cold turkey. That’s the only way to actually do it. Nicotine gum, patches you are just putting it off you aren’t actually getting any better. The first three days are kinda rough because you will have physical withdrawals then it gets better after that. I haven’t smoked in a month and a half. I want one every now and then but you just don’t do it.

I managed to quit for a year, when exams came up and things got stressful I told myself that I'd have just one cigarette. And so I did, smoked one, then didn't smoke again for a week.
And that's when my brain told me "see? One cigarette doesn't make you start smoking again. You can have one and then just stop again, just like you did. So have another one til the stress is over."

One day while drinking decided I could just have one smoke while standing behind the bar ... that was a Sunday (football). Monday I bummed a few smokes then on tuesday I bought a pack and went right back to smoking a pack a day by wednesday.
