There's a monument in Kiev, Ukraine similar to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. except that every name on it isn't a person and nor is it even a family. It's the name of an entire town or village that was wiped out after the Ukrainians refused Stalin's agricultural collectivism. Oh, and these people weren't shot or anything quick. They were starved to death. This is why the Ukrainians welcomed the Germans as liberators during WWII despite the Nazi's telling them that they would be enslaved into food production for the Third Reich.
I personally know people who lived under Soviet Communism both in Russia and East Germany. They are have universally told me that they would rather die with a rifle in their hand than live under that shit again.

My gfs grandparents were living under communist rule. 2 months after they were married, the red army came to their house to force him to take the Soldier's Oath (an oath that said you will do WHATEVER you are told, no matter how horrible, or be executed). He refused because of his religious beliefs, and was imprisoned for 3 weeks and beaten daily trying to get him to take the oath. Finally, they gave up and sent off to the other side of the country to be an army truckdriver (against his will and without pay, of course). For 5 years they forced him to serve and he wasn't allowed to see his newly-wed wife for that entire time.
He personally witnessed hundreds of people murdered by Russian soldiers over the course of those years, and he was constantly threatened with being sent to the gulag for his refusal to join in the murder of civilians.
