As an aside I'm a law abiding gun owner.

I appreciate good cops and good departments that maintain order. I grew up in a small town where the PD were a bunch of assholes, but living in a larger city now, and our PD here seems to be a bunch of good guys, they and their chief have made some pro-RKBA statements in the past, several of them are regulars at the local range. If I ever saw one of them losing a fight I'd feel compelled to jump in, or at least boot the shitbird in the head a couple times till he stopped resisting.
