I could start trolling and just call you a retard or something along those lines, but I recommend you actually read about things like the Paschal Mystery or the writings of various theologians throughout the ages.

Truthfully, I was an adamant atheist myself until I went to basic training. I started reading the bible out of boredom and ended up finishing it in my time there. It interested me enough that I started doing research, speaking to priests, and reading the writings of ancient philosophers. Over the course of a couple years I finally reached a day where I felt like the veil was lifted. I had reached an insight, to some sort of wisdom perhaps, that totally reshaped my world view. It completely invalidated and unquestionably changed my previous world view. If I were to compare it to something, I would say it was like a philosophical "red pill" that instantly and totally opened up my eyes. I can never go back and nor would I want to.

I'm not saying you should prescribe to my particular religion, or any religion in particular for that matter, but if you can muster up a bit of intellectual bravery it might totally change your worldview for the better. Seriously, take a class on theology, pick up some theological philosophy, and open your mind to new ideas. It's tremendous.

For me, I'm a big outdoorsman so learning about traditional Japanese Taoism was a revelation. I hadn't realized that religion could be more than some dude in the pulpit telling me I would go to hell. I'm personally catholic, but I find Taoism deeply appealing on many levels.

St. Augustine wrote that "the passages of scripture are shallow enough that a mouse may wade through them, and deep enough that an elephant may swim them.". Men have spent millennia discussing and debating the matters within the bible and there is still much more to be had. There is tremendous depth to be found therein.

The problem with modern christianity, particularly protestantism, is the lack of understanding of the underlying philosophical concepts, the biblical literalism that emerged during the 3rd great awakening at the end of the 19th century, and an emphasis on proselytization which has alienated the irreligious.

Fundamentally though, religion has attracted nearly every single living person on this earth since the dawn of human kind. Nearly every one of your ancestors worshipped, whether it was Christ, Zeus, or the winds. There is a natural draw and a natural human curiosity towards faith. My suggestion is that you open your mind and allow your curiosity to pull you.

To be clear, I don't hate you or your belief, or any atheist for that matter. If the afterlife exists as my faith describes it, I'm almost certain you'll be there with me assuming you've lived a good life. I'm not interested in "saving your soul" or putting another point on the board. I know it's hard to believe and I know it sounds foolish, but give it a try. Not just christianity, but many different religions.

Sorry man. This is just very important to me. I've seen what opening yourself up to faith can do for you. A very close friend of mine was the classic atheist. Nihilistic, depressed, etc. He had multiple suicide attempts. One night, talking about religion, I persuaded him to start studying theology. In time, he converted to a form of buddhism and he is doing much better now in all aspects of his life as a direct result.

Atheism is the cause of a considerable amount of nihilism, and I fundamentally believe that nihilism is a mental and social poison that ruins many lives. I believe that faith and philosophy are antidotes to nihilism. I apologize if my wall of text bothered you, but I sincerely hope that maybe I can help just a couple people.

I'm well aware of biblical exegesis, and how people will go to any lengths to cling to a belief they so desperately need to be true in order to give their lives meaning. It's the same with any world religion, and just a surface understanding of primitive man easily explains why religion was necessary for our survival as a species.

I don't hate you either, in fact I respect you for your candor and your apparent intelligence but you're never going to convince me that religion is the lynch pin to a fulfilling life, because it simple doesn't resonate with my sense of reason and rationality.
