I'm a Brit dating an American. I can say this with all good faith that I like a lot of Americans but always view them with a faint air of condescension. I know a lot of loveable idiots from the States and that's probably what my opinion is based on.
Adam White
Interesting. Know anyone who isn't an idiot? Other than your SO, I mean.
Also, do you just view them with condescension, or do you actually treat them that way? Because I've never gotten that vibe from anyone.
Easton Harris
Yeah, a couple of people I really respect but otherwise not. There is a whole culture of being superficial which feeds it I guess (gf is from SoCal). I don't treat them that way, but I find it is easier to get along with them if you approach it with a general air of detached bemusement.
P.S. Americans trash the Brits on here too - it's just part of it
Dominic Wright
>SoCal That explains it. That area produces the most vapid people you will ever meet.
>Americans trash the Brits on here Honestly, there's a lot of that IRL too. Although you probably won't experience much of it. It gets on my nerves. The most isolated people tend to criticize foreigners they've never met.
Christian Rodriguez
English don't think too much about whether they like anyone else based on country. It's all individual. You don't get credit for being from somewhere. Only seen how you present yourself, so make a good first impression, have a good story to say, be competent without revealing it until needed. Never offer advice...
Adam Morales
Well, that's good. But I was more asking about personal experiences. My thought is, the people who have prejudices against different cultures probably haven't met anyone from those cultures. Or at least, never made a friend.
Easton James
chill out big man, she's from there and went to berkley.
Noah Perry
yes yes I liked them with my mind
Jaxson Young
How to win the English over:
1. Be polite. 2. Don't swear. 3. Wait for someone to finish what they are saying, even exagerate the pauses to give them a chance to continue. 4. Don't ever mention politicians, religion or work. 5. Don't talk about women. 6. Be inventive. 7. Lying is acceptible as long as isn't said assuming they believe you. 8. Drink alchohol slowly, try to exhibit no difference, no change to your regular speech. 9. Be clean and well presented. Suit dress codes, dress to suit the setting. 10. Intimately know boating. 11. Be well traveled. 12. Be able to mingle with everyone without changing character, accent. Treat everyone the best you can. 13. Be extra polite to anyone serving. 14. Have a sense of humor, don't laugh at everything. Build it up to something woth laughing at if it wasn't funny and it was meant to be.
Austin Perry
Yeah, beacause you're representative of every 56 percenter that ever shitposted... dumb fucking Yank.
Isaiah Torres
Oh, no disrespect to her, I'm sure she's fine. I'm just speaking generally. There's going to be good people from all over. But the general culture there is fake as hell.
Aaron Clark
Fair enough! Good on ya.
Dylan Harris
Yes my auntie married an American man and he is the biggest waste of space I have ever met. He works 2 days a week and only cares about painting warhammer and tattooing himself. He does however paint himself as a very hard worker while leaching off of my grandparents (his mother and father in law). I know not all Americans are like this as I have been to the USA a fair few times and most the people are lovely
Matthew Murphy
fair enough, cheers mate
Blake Clark
>intimately know boating Splain pls.
The rest sounds like really solid advice.
David Hill
Exceptions don't defeat prejudices. If you go somewhere that seemed very wrong, as if everyone was aware of what was wrong and put an act on that it was ok, you're not going to discard that because you had a few friends there. People aren't representatives of the entire population of a place. Ambassedeurs who deeply care about a place are in a sense, they pass on the meaning behind things. They give excuses, but it doesn't change how things are.
Dylan Carter
Interesting. Glad to hear not all your experiences with us are bad. Sorry your auntie got a loser. But if she's happy, I guess that's what matters.
Adam Watson
Sure, that's certainly a possibility. I'm not saying every prejudice comes from ignorance. I'm just guessing that many do, and I feel the perception of Americans is one of them.
Then again, I'm pretty biased on this issue. So whatever. Just curious.
Jaxon Murphy
I've done my fair share. This website isn't where our true selves come out, if you ask me.
