What's the purpose of different octane levels in gasoline? Why not just have 1 good grade? What does higher octane fuel do and is it necessary?

Quality, higher octane tend to leave more residue and shit on your motor faster. At least that what we experimented while in college.

In a certain sense yes. But it was at chem school and we only worked on "motor clean" fuel for our project.
