Using drugs is a symptom of mental problems, not the cause. When people have bad lives, they seek substances that make the shittiness temporarily less shitty. If you took away all the drugs like magic, you'd still have a million homeless with mental problems, but they'd all be sober, but mentally ill. There are millions more who can handle their shit just fine and still lead productive lives. The logic that says "don't blame the gun, blame the user" is just as true with drugs. People are free to make their own choices. You can't prove that all people who buy guns are mentally well balanced, and many aren't. But that doesn't make them illegal, just a bad choice for some people. Same with drugs.

I work in an emergency department and some days we will narcan (reversal drug) 10 people a day, not including those narcan’d in transport by ems. Our officers now carry narcan and there’s billboards urging people to carry it as well. Taking a drive down Kensington ave around 3-6am and you’ll think the zombie apocalypse started. The amount of users that tell me that if they see someone die on dope they’ll pick them clean hoping they have some more of that good shit.
