Russia is basically just California or Texas, no comparison. China is a greater threat but it's going to collapse sooner than you think. Their economy is a house of cards, empty skyscrapers, bridges to nowhere, they try to control the people with disinformation and surveillance but they will rise up when they realize their regime is weak and will lead them to disaster. We are the world's consumers: we consume endless amounts of entertainment, imported goods, government benefits etc.
We cannot BORROW and SPEND our way to prosperity.
No country in the history of the world has been able to BORROW indefinitely.
Bailing out failed banks seemed like the right thing to do at the time... but it's becoming apparent that nothing was "saved" and nothing was "solved"... we just kicked the can further down the road. yes we postponed a crisis and what surely would have followed - a large correction and recession. but we added a massive amount of long-term debt to bail out failing banks, all in a misguided effort to avoid short-term pain. We should not have done that...
As time passes the distortions created by a centrally planned economy become more apparent, as assets continuously inflate and the country becomes mired in debt, it also becomes less and less competitive with the rest of the world. Additionally, the increased risk from our massively increased national debt calls into question the overall solvency of the currency, and we are already seeing other countries (our lenders) begin to move away from the US dollar as the world's reserve currency.
Once the crisis of confidence peaks, and the dollar loses its international reserve currency status... it's game over.

Sadly, yes this looks like the most likely outcome. At some point in the near future, the rest of the world will have adopted a new reserve currency, or it's equivalent. Nobody will care about the millions and trillions of fiat dollars that the US prints. Purchasing power will be next to nothing, as there will be zero demand for the US dollar. Hyperinflation will be the new reality. Nobody will be able to afford expensive imported products, and we will be forced to accept a drastically changed quality of life.
rather than trying to prevent inflation and prevent an inevitable recession, the government needs to allow this recession (part of the natural economic cycle) to occur. interest rates need to be allowed to naturally rise, this will trigger a painful recession in the short-term - nonproductive businesses will close, jobs will be lost, but capital and labor will be freed up for use in other productive areas of the economy, but prevent even worse long-term pain.
What we need is a STABLE currency with minimal inflation. the more the government tries to manipulate the economy, the more it keeps distorting it ... with costs rising soon $15/hour won't be enough, then $20/hour won't be enough, etc... we should be aiming to keep the prices of things as STABLE as possible. that's the best way to stimulate growth, just by keeping things stable and predictable.
our government must stop quantitative easing (money printing), stop asset inflation, and allow interest rates to rise. Higher interest rates will discourage borrowing and spending, and encourage personal savings. We must restart non-debt financed capital investment in this country - the true engine of a productive, sustainable economy.

Forcing repayment isn't the really the point. China and Russia both want to dethrone the US as the world's reserve currency. If that happens, no amount of devalued Dollars will pay off our bad debts.
The present course spells disaster. The US can hardly afford to pay the interest alone on the rapidly expanding national debt. Federal Reserve interest rate controls are effectively broken and stuck at or near zero for many years now. Inevitably, the rest of the world will realize we have no choice but to default on our obligations. The government can only keep printing money hoping to stave off complete disaster. Assets are continuously inflating, giving people a false sense of wealth. Government inflation measures such as CPI have been repeatedly changed to understate inflation. Likewise, methods of measuring employment have been changed to hide the true level of unemployment.
The government does not have a solution for this. The cumulative effect of well-intentioned (but misguided) economic stimulus is crippling our economy and dooming our currency. A recession is needed to allow the economy to cure inefficiencies and return to equilibrium. We need the Federal Reserve to stop printing money and allow interest rates to naturally rise. Rising rates will discourage reckless borrowing and spending, and encourage savings and capital investments. There is a lot of short term pain down the road to curing the economy. Good luck getting votes for that...
