What the fuck does the conductor in an orchestra actually do? Like if he was to fall over or something, it's not like the music would stop. Most of the musicfags don't even look at him. He's just up there to look like he's doing something important. In reality, he's not needed.

He tells the musicians what to play, how to play, when to play, where to play, and why to play.

/thread, also keeps time and tempo

>what the fuck does conductor actually do?
>being this absolutely retarded
You've obviously never played an instrument or even seen an orchestra perform

You dumb fucks are missing the point. No one looks at him. They are reading the music. Old dude could walk off stage and everything would be the same.
Being a conductor is the ultimate jew job. Just go up on stage and move your arms around like a queer. I can do that shit no problem

He is the Coach
do you want to see a spastic one?

The main job is for the conductor is to keep time and tempo

That's bullshit. It's all a scam you've believed all your life.

Bet you didn't see all the rehearsals before that performance. Also, you have a serious learning and reasoning disability too.

Fuck it, I'm gonna be a conductor. I'll prove you fuckers wrong.

Ok dumb dumb, if you don’t know how to play any musical instruments get ready to embarrass yourself and expose yourself as the mentally unstable retard you are

>guis I know music, I listen to Billie Eillizzsh and Adele
>tempo is Celsius and Fahrenheit
>feed me soy

While I enjoy your enthusiasm and questioning of things I have to confirm, without the conductor, the orchestra wouldn't function.

He really keeps things moving. Sure, without him they would still play, but it definitely would sound off and patchy.

He's like a film director. You only see the result, not the work.
The work happens in rehearsal. The notes may be in the page, but the conductor directs how the orchestra generates music.
Or just think he waves his arms around. That's fine too. As long as you enjoy the music.

thats what notes r for

If someone never listens to orchestra music and is interested in it, it's hard to imagine.
Modern music does not need a conductor.

was a bandfag in middle/high school. can confirm, they dont do shit.

Just ordered one of those Harry Potter conductor wands on Amazon. I'm pretty much legit already.
Conductors are a sham. Invented by neets that want extra money.

Just make sure you take off your shoes, and use a metal pool pole not a PVC one to poke the power lines

See, I knew it.

ITT OP is a bored Neet troll

Obviously never played any music at ANY level. Even a lead guitarist and bass guitarist need timing to play together.
Imagine a room full of people playing different music at the same time. You won’t be able to hear shit coz you’ve got different instruments next to you. You play what you’ve learned in time to the conductor.
Even having said all this it doesn’t matter coz without logic or reasoning you won’t understand

90% of that is true

was orchestra fag in middle and highschool, can debunk, our conductors always kept us on tempo and volume, stuff that shifts a lot in string performances and needs to be rather exact all across the board to not sound like trash

Kekekeke

this is a troll post, but for anyone who is not retarded who wants a good book to read on the subject check out The Silent Musician: Why Conducting Matters by Mark Wigglesworth: amazon.com/Silent-Musician-Why-Conducting-Matters/dp/022662255X

>Even a lead guitarist and bass guitarist need timing to play together.

I'm not OP, but you kind of just made his point. I'm a guitarist, and I've had jam sessions with friends. We didn't need a click track or a drummer. One guy played rhythm, the other did lead, and we'd trade off every so often. It's entirely possible for musicians to find a rhythm with each other without a guide. Of course, with that many musicians, it would be a lot more difficult, and many of them would respond to each other going up or down in tempo, so the music would probably waver quite a bit. But still. It's possible.

i took a music course to get my associate's. i learned all about the mathematics and design of scales and chords, and one afternoon we learned to conduct. there are simple moves for 1-4 beats. look it up. they're like a visual metronome but might also remind to emphasize for groups of the orchestra.

now, are you ready for the next end of the world? it's coming now. they warned about it at the end of "the big short". i wonder if anyone did "the big short 2" in reality.

No it’s not proving his point at all.
He said there’s no need for a conductor.

An orchestra can all play together but it wouldn’t be as good to the trained ear.
I myself would not notice the difference but my wife is a major in music and a major bore when discussing it.
She went to Dartington Music School or some shite and a lot of her friends that she met there are professional musicians and one in particular is a jazz composer and conductor.
It kinda pisses me off when I listen to some music and say “That sounds nice” and wife replies “They’re making a lot of mistakes”
Aaaaah go fuck yourself

That's why I'm so glad I never went to a music school. I feel like they can't just let go and enjoy music the way you should.

I feel the same way about most media. Books, movies, video games. My goal is to be like a child. Empty my mind of my pre-conceived notions, try not to make mental notes, or comparisons. And just see how the art makes me feel. That's one of the reasons people don't like sequels. They're focusing too much on the memory of the first one.

When I'm done, or on a second run through, I can analyze more, but the first time, I just want to see if it pushes my good buttons.

He just keeps the tempo and gives cues.

I play in an orchestra and a conductor is very helpful. I can always see my conductor out of the corner of my eye and just glance up at her if I need to know the tempo. Like when we are slowing down or speeding up she keeps us together. She also gives us cues when there are lots of measures of rest)

That’s why I like Nirvana.
Technically they were very good but the antics made them what they were.
I really can’t stand “good singers” that don’t have any emotion or feel any connection to the songs they’re singing but the pitch and tone are perfect.

He keeps the musicians awake while they wait to play their part.

>can’t stand “good singers” that don’t have any emotion

Agreed 100%. That's one of my issues with listening to old lounge singers and those famous old songs from the '40s back. Sure, they're talented. Their vibrato is on point.

But they sound bored.

Keeps the beat and makes a spectacle for other people to watch.

Rarely, very rarely the conductor might also be the composer then there's nobody better to conduct than the person who wrote the music in the first place.

He specifies the speed. In an orchestra you often don't have somebody play the drums to give the base stroke.

I think "specifies" isn't right, he keeps the speed as written by the composer. A conductors job isn't to create, it's to execute.

A "conductor" is nothing more than a glorified metronome.

What’s the difference between a bull and an orchestra?
On a bull the horns are in the front and the asshole is in the back.

That's a retarded analogy, given that then who's controlling the bull in the first place? The composer is and the conductor is kind of like a guy with a whip.

A conductor wouldn't have anything to conduct without a composer in the first place.

Keep in mind also that microphone and recording technology was drastically different and much less able to record nuances of the voice

gosh she's a fucking QUEEN.

most of what he does is really before the concert. He gets them working together during practices, gets them coordinated, refines their timing and style.
By the time the concert happens, they are playing as a group, so he basically just counts them off and keeps time.
t. played clarinet in middle school

Wow, I am surprised no one has given a real answer yet. In the higher up varsity bands, YOU ARE NOT READING YOUR MUSIC .... you memorize it and your eyes are to be ALWAYS on the conductor and only on the conductor. The conductor tell you how fast to play, how loud to play, when to come back in off of a rest, how hard to play ... they control the very soul of the music. Without them, you either have a dead flat mess ... or a bunch of idiots with their noses in sheet music who dont actually know what they are playing.

>not free

I thought it would be something like this OP. Yeah most players may not be directly looking at the conductor, but a guy waving his arms wildly is sure to capture the periphery of your vision.

The conductor can also choose to play some parts intensely, quietly or faster. Think of him as a really old school DJ. It seems hard to change your mind but hope this helps.

Basically, he’s a metronome.

>why to play
What?

And will you be going to talk to you local symphony about an internship?
"I have the stick, you have to give me the job."

What's the professional background of most conductors? Do they start off just playing an instrument or several instruments? Do they write music?

Professional musician here. Can’t do our job without them, but only really them about 10% of the time in performances, hence concentrating and not looking when we don’t need to. They can be very cool like Dudamel or egotistical dicks
