its really not complicated. The south felt like they werent being represented by the elites in the North, and they thought "this is fucking retarded, the whole point of the revolutionary war was to break free of an elitist power that ruled over us without allowing us to properly govern ourselves".
In their mind, it was a patriotic war against tyranny. In the mind of the North, it was about holding the union together and keeping the United States properly united (there were pro slavery Northerners too, but the survival of the union was a priority to them).

which is why its stupid to say the south fought the war because of slavery, since the vast, VAST majority of people didnt benefit from, and were likely even negatively impacted by, slavery
