1. The older folks have rose tinted glasses. They aren't living in the best conditions right now, being a kleptocracy and all that. I'm sure they'd change their tune if things went back to the soviet system.
2. People like to feel powerful. They were feared back in the cold war, I'm sure that felt cool.
3. Alot of the younger generation never experienced the shit under the soviet system, so of course they think it wasn't bad.

The problem is that you don't know what communism and socialism is. Communism is a stateless, classless, moneyless society. Socialism is lower-stage communism in Marxian terms, which is the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. Under socialism, the state controls all the major centers of economic power.

The USSR and every other one of those states with a communist party in power had socialism. China, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Vietnam and the DPRK have socialism now. Every single one of these acknowledge that they do not have communism yet, but socialism as they still have a state and money.

The goal of socialist states is to eventually have communism, but that's in the very distant future. Under socialism, things are produced to be used and consumed, not according to profit. A socialist state's main goal is to improve the living standards for its citizens, which they have succeeded in doing every single time.
