Did you smoke pot as a young adult? I've read that guys who smoke a lot in their early to late teens are very prone to becoming schizophrenic. Had a friend who almost ended up there, but he only heard voices when he smoked.

There's a problem with that train of thought to. Does the weed cause the Schizophrenia, or does the Schizophrenia cause you to seek drugs?
It's probably the second one. As Schizophrenics are known to be drug abusers. Tobacco, alcohol, and weed mainly.
But, I know mine wasn't caused by weed, I had the symptoms before ever smoked. It may have made them worse though. That's a possibility.

Sorry if this is a loaded question or one you aren't particularly interested in. I want to avoid stereotypes and show a more honest example of schizophrenia in my writing. I'm particularly concerned about nailing this because the character in question begins his journey in a villain role, which I know is commonplace and often strikes a nerve with people.

I'm referring to fictional portrayals. I don't exactly have a catalogue of examples, but the common complaint I read is that the more extreme/rare symptoms get portrayed as the rule, such as tulpa-tier interactions and primarily visual hallucinations rather than the more common aural ones. I'm not trying to suggest that visual hals can't be predominant to an individual, but statistically, they don't seem to make up the bulk of hallucinations for most schizophrenics. Other sensory trickery, such as tactile hallucinations are something I've yet to come across in any fictional portrayal.
Like most fictional portrayals, the truth often gets romanticized in the process. I'm interested in what aspects you feel (if any) have been omitted/overlooked in that process. I'd also love to know if there are any aspects you actually prefer be romanticized for the sake of story.

You're pretty much on the nose with that one. Stuff like visual hallucinations appearing far too clear. Or a lack of auditory hallucinations.
I guess the biggest problem I can think of is how it's often portrayed as unidimensional.
The creator may only focus on what the Schizophrenic is seeing. Not how they feel, or what their innate reaction is. There's a lot of stuff happening when one is in psychosis.
Most fictional portrayals make it seem like "oh yea they just see stuff".
Shutter Island is one of the better fictional portrayals of mental illness I've seen so far. It captures a couple different facets of what it's like to be in psychosis.

One of his lectures, or a number of them really, deal with understanding why you do what you do.
It really helped me and I think it might help you if you could see things not from your ego or id (thought and instinct) but from your super ego which is hard to identify with or understand.

i think the key is in localising the voices to actual people. to achieve the level of "unity consciousness" where everybody is true, personal, and innately knowing about you.
I've often wished to bring this into reality but with a weariness of the "aural hallucination" aspects of these drugs. I have experienced this phenomena (other people talking about me) on high doses of marijuana.
people are like speakers or radio tuners, what they tune into is up for grabs. and if you are tuning into something without an visible speaker, why have other people in the world at all?

They are pretty constant the "carrying degrees" is the severitu.
I used to hallucinate all the time as a kid. I used to see people in mirrors and if I looked thyself in the mirror in the dark it would look nothing like me, and would see things that weren't there at distances or against walls (one time eve cried myself to sleep because the walls turned red and I thought it was blood)
Things I used to think stupid I can't help but believe now (I literally have 2 lottery numbers memorized because I can't shake the idea that life just restarts when you die) and certain fantasies (which will not be named) are starting to bleed into reality, and I'm acting on impulses I swear I never would.
And I'm constantly fighting with people because they say shit that I can reconcile emotionally and I make some slight remark and it just turns into an argument because I can't reconcile emotions with logic. I almost literally cannot think emotionally (gotten good at pretending though).
Also pride is stupid af and anyone who makes decisions based on pride don't deserve their pride. Thats not what the arguments are about, usually it's about platonic love, grief, or respect (I know respect isn't an emotion but it provokes emotional response)
