At this point I feel like one of the best solutions is just to form breakaway communities which focus on sustainability and reliance on local supply chains, and eschew mainstream consumer culture. The US has a long history of utopic experiments (with varying degrees of success), and similar ideas have been tried and been reasonably successful, even without the benefits of modern technology.
It's kind of my long term goal for my little land project - find some other like minded people and expand.

One of the major drivers behind moving domestic industry overseas was that those countries do not have the same environmental and labor regulations we have in developed countries, and can thus operate without being held accountable for the real damages which their industry incurs.

the only case where such logic could apply is in the processing of thread and dye of clothing, but even then, these industries are cleaner than they used to be in the 80s. Other than that, every other cheap product that is manufactured, is cheap because of a number of factors includin the collision of supply chains, know how, equipment and very cheap labor to get the job done. I know when people think of cheap labor they think of sweat shops and sewing machines, but thats not the reality as much anymore, we're talking of engineers and programmers, people who get paid over 100k a year in the US you can get them in India for $800 or less a month, same goes for China, and when you have such a massive scale you achieve savings, precisely because there is so little waste, including the environmental impact, if you decentralise that, you would be not only scattering that impact but you would be increasing it because of the inefficiency of the production process because it has to be done a such a much lower scale.
