Skyler at the very beginning will be a fairly rough person, fairly ruthless and vindictive. Yet she endeavours to only kill people who deserve it. And genuinely want to leave every place she goes to better than how she found it.
I want her to be at the lowest point in her life at the beginning of the narritive. She needs to be on the edge of sanity ready to snap at anything.
Her backstory is going to beat the optimism out of her with the harsh reality of her situation. She will believe she can never be happy again, because she believes she doesn't deserve it. She is going to be so broken up inside from all the guilt.
Now I realize why I felt I needed to reread the black swordman ark. It's just like Guts after the eclipse. She needs to be in her most vulnerable and emotionally weak state, then she will find a new path to go down that will help her regain the happiness she lost.
Her character development will be her acceptance of what she is, and pulling herself out from the depths of despair. Learning to move on from the past and trying to foster a better future.

The antagonist of the first arc would be another one of the human weapons, that had embraced his violent nature, and become a feared warlord, with many enemies.
He is a bit basic to establish the setting and characters although I do think his backstory relates to the overall narrative pretty well.
I see the first ark of the story as a mirror of the story as a whole.
