Hunting is a straw man. The round most "assault weapons" use is .223 Remington, which is often banned in hunting because it isn't lethal enough. .223 wounds, and it would be immoral to wound your target animal and give it the opportunity to run off and slowly bleed out.
There are very few automatic weapons in the US, and almost all of them were produced at least 40 years ago. To get one, you have to let the Gman ride straight up your asshole.
