I live in Oklahoma now and it's never been like that. There are always parts of the sky where the sun is peaking through or you can at least tell it's there. The Midwest that's not always the case and it can legitimately lead to depression.

Detroit has gotten a lot better in the last 5 years or so, its still mostly empty but the actual downtown portion is way nicer now and you can walk around it at night without getting mugged as long as you stay near the stadiums and casinos. Same deal with Chicago really, it's really only a couple square miles of a huge city that have any real problems and the rest is on par with any other big midwest city. Baltimore is a hell hole and I would never like to visit, I've seen Pink Flamingos, I know the weird shit that comes out of that city

Barring the public transit comment, as a native San Diegan I'd agree. There's seriously no public transit here. One train line that runs throughout the town and that's it. Every other bigger city I've been to or lived in didn't feel like it required a car, but SD does.
