In the 300 years in the future, but electronics technology had degenerated.
My protagonis has superhuman strength, and stonger bones and ligament than normal humans.
I imagine metallurgy and chemistry had advanced considerably so alot of the modern weapons of the age use stonger metals that can resist deformation more.
I imagine that a new form of gunpowder would be developed, that has much more gas pressure.( sorted like thos special bullets in Ghost in a shell)
Basically using this new small arms developments a bullet the size of 9mm would have the same muzzle velocity, as a current day full powered rifle round.

revolvers are always kickass, and with those stronger bones and ligaments mc-kun should be slinging around a handheld elephant gun, basically. with some sort of gimmick that i can't think of.
i listen to music and ride bmx nowadays. work 1 shift a week. i used to shoot clay pigeons competitively a couple years ago, but shit happens. very boring person, but i'm hoping to change it.

A double action revolver
Love spaghetti westerns, and dirty harry too much for it not to be
But inwas thinking that considering she would be going up against modern weapons your average revolver, even a particularly powerfull one would be a disadvantage, I was thinking about how to make a revolver that with enough practice would stand up against assault rifles and such.
First of all the ammo would be around the size of .357 magnum, but with the more powerfull powder change that is practically a hand cannon, the same round would be used more often in anti material rifles.
Any normal person would break their wrist attempting to use it.
Instead of break action, or a moving cylinder it would use a loading gate with a hammer cuttof( basically if you open the loading gate the trigger will do nothing but turn the cylinder)
Also to get an adequate gas seal between the cylinder and barrel, the cylinder would move forward and seat itself into the barrel when the trigger is pulled.
Due to the fact that the cylinder moves forward and back whe th trigger is pulled you should be able to empty the cylinder by pointing it upwards with the loading gate open and pulling the trigger 6 times.

I think the I will start the story within the unpopulated frontiers of the setting, that are just beginning to have civilization rebuilt.
Skyler would be a gun for hire, and is living day by day trying to survive in a world hostile to her kind. She has to reconcile her guilty conscious with the harsh situation she finds herself in.
Sort of imagine the Black Swordman ark in a scifi western setting, that's the feel I'm going for

So when it comes to design of character I usually lean toward three concepts (Survival, Defense, Personality.)
Survival is usually things like water bottles, possible little vials of potions, pieces of tech that might be useful in a scifi setting (Borderlands shields are a good example of this. Each character wears theirs in the different spot.)
Defense is simple, guns, shields, knives, armor, just things that would seem pratical in the setting. Mass effects omni tools are a good example of this.
Personality: This should be a good reflection of the character. A person that believes in self defense without murder might carry a staff or a simple club. In sci-fi setting a taser, or non-lethal tool might work. A hoarder might carry a bunch of useless trinkets that clash in style.
A person who is vain or shy might wear masks (Vega from SF is a good example) A former military nut might still wear old ranks as a reminder.
A good look at your character should tell the audience something about them.
