5.56 can incapacitate targets without killing them and is better for self defense.
The goal of self defense is to incapacitate first, but kill if necessary. Hunting weapons are made to kill with as few shots as possible as to be humane and prevent an animal from escaping.
308 is deadlier. Your point is silly. 5.56 was made to be lighter, yes. But also followed a new doctrine of incapacitation of the enemy, not just annihilating them.
I'd say a 5.56 weapon is much safer and a 308 would be deadlier. If you want folks to have less deadly weapons, you should really put it the other way around.
