2) First Amendment altered to protect against hate speech.
3) Hate speech expanded to include criticizing government officials.
Not saying this would happen overnight, or even in the space of one decade, but once we hit 1), it's no longer a question of "if", but only of "when". Further, direct democracy would only ensure that major cities like San Francisco and New York City effectively decide every single election, drowning out the voice of rural citizens who the urban crowd aren't thinking of, making the rural population - who are both more self-sufficient and on average better armed - even angrier at the cities. Surely, this path forward can only lead to peace and prosperity for all.
