It's not an either/or though. Both automation and immigration further decrease the bargaining power that employees have with employers. It is always a question ownership in a crowded and finite world, and since life is far cheaper in most of it than it is here, immigration is one of the factors that cheapens it those parts of the world that are that developed first, and are most developed.

Automation slowly taking over the mundane jobs, that were usually decent pay and needed at least high school education to do. The jobs that people traditionally never even fathomed to make careers out of are the ones illegals and immigrants had.
Now that's all that is left, are those shitty farm harvesting jobs and general labor jobs, so it's more of an illusion that they are taking peoples jobs.
Illegals and newly migrated people cant just walk into a ford plant or a steel mill and get a job. But neither can someone with high school education.

If your job can be automated or taken over by an uneducated immigrant then find a job that requires more skill. I went to trade school after high school starting out at over $20/hr, ten years later im making $35/hr and double pay after 8 hrs/day or 40/week. I work 9 months out of the year and make around 75k. Its not hard, I just run heavy equipment and got paid while I was training. No debt, own my house and newer vehicles outright and my wife stays at home.
