My breaking point was right after her calling my time in combat zones a "violent sin, but she forgave me" when she and nearly the entirety of the church didn't question, the keep in mind, youth group pastor's silent talking to and abrupt transfer. He was creepy as fuck and that's often how churches will handle pedophiles. There was a disproportionate handful of children with emotionally developmental issues and signs of abuse in that small town, all young girls with dark hair. I tried explaining what it looked like and she accused me of attacking the church, I was done and disgusted. That place is a cult, I swear.

I get where you're coming from. It's true that those who claim to be the most pious are also the most corrupt, and their beliefs and treatment of others (be it an outsider or family member) is incredibly conditional, because their beliefs create a system enabling them to pat themselves on the back for the "good" they do, while isolating the outside world and allowing for others to participate on the terms they and their religious sect mutually share, at cost of being ostracized or shamed. It's just tough to have an interest in religion or devout worship (outside of historic context) after having such a shit experience with it as a third party observer, and hearing the religiously strict nightmares of upbringings some of my friends had to endure.

An athiest can tick the boxes of important morality beliefs. Don't kill, don't cheat, don't lie, don't be jealous of others. Its basically just being a well balanced non-believing person. They can be athiest and still be a decent person. Thinking being a christian makes you inherently good and being an athiest makes you inherently bad is a foolish, simplistic, prejudicial error in judgment that will ultimately bite you in the ass, because people are individuals. And no matter what they claim to be, they can still fuck you over.

Most non-religious families are broken up and wracked with divorce, infidelity, and family members that are not on speaking terms. I know plenty of in-tact, perfectly functional Christian families, I don't know a single non-religious family that doesn't have at least one single mom, drug addict, alcoholic, or sexually dysfunctional member.

Religious or not, a shit upbringing without fair discipline and a strong ethical standard leads to trainwrecks.
