well theyre ostensibly about a post-nuclear-war that tears apart most of the planet (as far as im aware) and its kind of like a survival apocalypse game where you find a macguffin or fight to control a macguffin or stuff like that. its pretty heavy on world building, or the ones made by obsidian entertainment are
the ones made by bethesda are more like post apocalyptic sandboxes where you shoot lasers at angry people, not-zombies, and not-ogres
but they can each be fun in their own way. the old ones are isometric rpgs, the modern ones are first/third person shooters

apart from pathfinder i haven't tried many other fantasy adventure systems, dnd works quite well in that regard, but it's interesting how differently gameplay can work! call of cthulu isn't very action-oriented after all, so it's a big change of pace in comparison

Yeah. It's just Fallout 3 ESMs (master plugin files) running in the updated New Vegas version of Gamebryo. So you get all of the extensions like JIP and NVSE. Fallout 3 modding is dead for the most part, especially in terms of actively improving the underlying systems. No point when NV is already nearly the same thing with more functionality than 3's version of Gamebryo.

the main draw for me (other than being able to play both games at once) is the massively increased stability in NV, 3 had severe crashing issues for me, i basically couldnt play it at all for more than 30 minutes at a time

damage threshold and similar mechanics in other games are legitimately bad unless tackled very carefully

i guess dt is technically more realistic? as in usually armor will almost totally protect you until it's overwhelmed, after which point it won't mitigate damage much, tho it's not quite that simple
being realistic doesn't necessarily make it a better game mechanic ofc! so still a matter of taste... in the case of fallout 3 and new vegas, it wasn't really something i paid much attention to or really noticed
