The guy was being charged with a shit ton more than just this swatting incident. They went after him for making bomb threats and making false claims about bombing Federal buildings.

So it's not so much that he plead guilty and got the max penalty anyway, it's that he plead guilty to loads of things and only got the max penalty once. He was probably looking at a life time in jail.

i'm afraid most people don't understand that cops don't just "sign up". it's not just "hi, i'd like to join police academy" and it's like the military. i guess it takes at least community college to know that cops have to get a real college degree in law enforcement. i even happened to have a computer science course--advanced java--in the optics building that also held the law enforcement courses because optics isn't that extensive and the whole building also doubles as a museum.
