I ended up in a shelter for two years and sought to get myself out of it. My route was through study, which I was lucky enough to be subsidised for, which is good because I couldn't just take cash in hand work - I tried it for six months, before working in a freezer highlighted a problem I didn't know I had before that: Arthritis, all my cash in hand work had been for nothing because of medical bills that I was not in control of. I had to seek a way out that didn't involve labor which was the easiest work to find of course. I volunteered selling donated items on eBay because it gave me office experience, but entry level office work wasn't cutting it either and eventually I found a subsidised 'access' course that gave me the necessary academic background to get a university place and scholarshipped my way through. Again, not something everyone could do, and I know that which is why I don't espouse your stupid and reductive ideology.

I was never in prison, just didn't quite appreciate the value of education the first time through (young dumb). After finding a way back into education literally from homelessness I managed to study my way to a research position where they needed a fluid dynamics physicist. Like I said I was working as you said until it became physically impossible for me to do so. I had worked hard and saved up doing whatever odd jobs I could, all communication I did through the shelter phone, all research I did on library computers. I was so close o could taste the rent deposit when my knee buckled while hauling perishables into a freezer and put me out of physical work long term. The medical bills shot my savings to shit. I've been in the research position since just after my 30th (a bit over a year) and I'm still paying off medical debt. Thankfully now I am insured so future bullshit won't screw me.

i live in tucson. i got a great job supporting AOL dial up in march of 1997. within a year, they told us that since tech support made no money, we had to actually meet a quota of offering people some fucking stupid gasoline coupons--read that as many times as you need, it will never make sense--and i quit. a few months later the company folded. then i got a job supporting windows 98/ME. it ended a couple of years later and was outsourced to india for half the price per hour. we heard silly stories about those fucks... how they were not allowed their own transportation and could only come to work with a FORCED shuttle.
then, i did a bunch of miserable phone jobs. the last job i worked was for sprint billing. 50% of the calls were black people begging to NOT pay their bill and get a free month or months. they were used to doing it. the basic line was that we couldn't authorize that. then, they got uppity, and we were supposed to transfer the angry tards to level 2. we were happy to do that. one day, we were told that we were all getting a promotion to level 2. i "no call no showed" for two days and got fired. i was happy.
a few months later, i went back to college. i have multiple degrees and more coming. the thing is... once you've had something somewhat decent, and it keeps degrading, you get something slightly better, it also degrades, you try something simple, they send you to the dogs...

Guy is making $30 an hour now - decent pay and he’s not even fully licensed yet.

I'm not looking for work at all. I have work and volunteer my time on days off. Where I volunteer there are several residents who are out looking for labor work during the day, looking for night club crier jobs or anything during the night. One lady gets 4 hours sleep then just gets back to it. She's only been here a few months but no luck so far. I hope she's not one of the ones who gets stuck here, but there's nothing I can do about it.
