Slayer is only slightly better in that their tone is grittier/harsher than Metallica's and that has a better feel to me.
Other than that, they're both pretty boring. Tom can only sing one note loud or louder and the Satanism gimmick is tired.
The superior choice is Exodus' Bonded By Blood -- which essentially is better than Slayer and Metallica's best.
