- The only real difference between regular and synthetic oil is the amount of detergents and other additives in them. You can get the benefits of synthetic oil at regular oil prices simply by adding a cup of laundry detergent or dish soap at your next oil change. If you see a lot of brown varnish inside your engine when looking through the oil fill, use Comet brand scouring powder instead for a squeaky clean engine.
