Yeah. The 'lore' was that it was a bug in the fluffies that caused them to view horns and wings as monsters. Alicorns also tend to be smarter than earth's and pegasi.

There was headcanon which stated that with the original official public release fluffies, alicorns really were a birth defect and were to be rejected. What happened is the public began to demand alicorns because they were rare and therefore more exclusive (expensive) so Hasbio updated the genetic code so mares would now recognize alicorns as normal foals. The problem is that the original fluffs could interbreed with the updated fluffs and because of the random lottery that is fluffy genetics, sometimes this updated recognition code wouldn't be passed on.

And I guess this ties into the whole thing about rejecting brown foals too. The lore is that the focus groups who were consulted during the development stage gave brown fluff very low scores because who wants a biotoy the same color as a regular animal? Not seeing a profit in brown foals, Hasbio programmed the mares to reject them so they could focus their energy on the more profitable technicolor foals.

The other headcanon reason as to why mares reject brown foals is because they're programmed to think shit is bad and with the foals being the same color, their brain isn't complex enough to make the distinction.
