I mean, being in the favor of a fascist has historically been a rewarding place to be and it's very easy to pretend like you never supported the fascist when they get deposed. Most people don't like the idea of supporting the weak or having shit taken away from them, and most people fail to appreciate the cost and scope of a government and the services they receive from them both explicitly and implicitly. Couple that with an unspoken ethos of eugenics and the false belief in a meritocracies existing beyond caste structures and variable privilege. And its easy to see how authoritarianism can assert itself once inequality reaches fever pitches and total minorities outnumber any individual majority. Socialism equity and is generally anti-individuality by homogenizing self-expression...and fascism is about individuals choosing a conformal path for different self-expressive motivations.
