I enjoy Japanese movies depicting high school life as one full of anxiety for the future, existential dread and protagonists who just go with the flow and don't have any goals in life.
I'd like to talk to anyone who also enjoys these films.

im here brother.. japs do it best
Do you have any favourites?
Himizu 2012 - fav film ever, Sion Sono directed. Protagonist parents hate him and left him - he operates a boat shed that he doesnt care about - gets caught up in drama, questions his role in life.
bright future 2003 - Not highschool, but factory workers, one owns a jelly fish.. thats all i will say
other sion sono - suicide club, love exposure - loosely the same ball park
Yureru 2006 - not highschool.. but good movie.. one brother runs a family fuel station, other brother moved to tokyo and is a cool photographer.. comes back home and there is some drama
I liked Love Exposure and Suicide Club, haven't seen the rest. Thanks.
What about you? Do you identify with the characters at all? Are you searching for someone?
i dig sion sono as a director.. he is absurd and existential.. most western viewers dont understand it and think his movies dont make entire sense.
to me life is absurd, i question what it is all about all the time.. i can respect the 'plugged in' normies.
i have a GF - i search for people i can relate.. today i was thinking that i will never be able to find someone that entirely understands.. but bla
jap movies are the best at the moment..
for TV, you might like TERRACE HOUSE, or HEART SIGNAL.
How are you going?
negro
*cant respect normies
I understand where you are coming from, my issue with these kind of films is that they are blatantly derivative of Tokyo Story; a film that landed Japan some serious fame on the world stage of cinema.
can you explain more.. i am just an amateur..
japanese culutre, and relgion is more about material reality.. rather than some God that knows all.. hence they are more absurd.. hence they produce heaps of cool subcultures
I've never seen Tokyo Story, but I think even if they were inspired by it the films they create are their own thing
we should make a FB group or someshit
finally a fucking good thread
I don't have a facebook but I'd be happy to talk to other anons about these films
your recommendations then?
I've been studying japanese for over 2 years and even though I'm good with grammar and all that I feel like I need to listen to it more often so I know what sounds they make/words they use informally but I could never get into anime. Favorite films are Inglourious Basterds and Whiplash. Only non-Ghibli japanese movie I've watched was Battle Royale and I thought it was enjoyable. Any recommendations?
love exposure is a classic. I'll have to check out some of your other suggestions.
I also like "Shiki-jitsu", though it's not about highschool.
>can you explain more.. i am just an amateur..
japanese culture and society reached its peak during WWII during which time they began to export themselves throught violence across the asian continent and the pacific. the people themselves were worshipping the emporer as a "living god" and were charging their beliefs against the spearline. they not only failed, but they failed hard. this created a deep feeling of defeat and confusion about the world, leading to "Shikata ga nai" or the idea that "nothing can be done about it." then, instead of realizing their worst fears about defeat at the hands of western barbarians, they were rebuilt by the westerners and grew back into valued allies and achieved an economy once unthinkable. here we have the origin for their storytelling that deals with anxiety about the future; whereas western cinema and culture holds the future as being "what you make of it," their culture treats the future as if it is an inescapable truth that you cannot avoid. Tokyo Story highlights this with the fading away of parents as their children grow up and move on. good or bad, sad or happy, the future is coming and it cannot be stopped; not even by a god emperor or nuclear war.
>japanese culutre, and relgion is more about material reality
this is not correct. just because core concepts of shinto do not translate perfectly into western thought does not mean shinto is "more materical."
...
>like nihilism
no, I do not think a religous and culture belief that results in temples being built to fox gods that guard a particular forest is more existential than any other religion that builds temples or totems. we are talking about a faith that prevents children from swimming in a stream or river unless a cucumber is tossed in first to distract the turtle people that will otherwise try and stick their hand up your butt in search of your soul. just because they aren't monotheistic does not mean they think about the world in terms devoid of supernatural.
i wanna meet this turtle
and about the "dictating god," that is largely irrelevant to the point. all gods dictated how everyone lived their day to day life. think of the "commandments" in the Judeo-Christian faith but instead the entire dictation coming from one god, each commandment comes from an individual god. at the end of the day, the only difference is how many different temples you need to build.
This thread is perfect.
I also love Sion Sono. My favorite of his films is probably Suicide Club, I really need to re-watch it again soon. I feel like I'm running out of good Japanese movies to watch, struggling to find movies of the same caliber as Sono's films. I love movies where you have a strong feeling of hopelessness.
Terrace house is nice as well, especially since one of the hosts of the show is an actress that also appeared in Sono's "Tag" movie, she cute as fuck.
While I still had a gf I always tried getting her into Japanese cinema but she had a strong distaste for it.
How about a discord?
ok
you make it and link it
TORICHAN.... HNNNNGGGGGGG
(she sucked in tag though)
Yeah she wasn't that great, but boy is she nice to look at
discord dot gg/967MWsf
>discord dot gg/967MWsf
get in there :D
>they are blatantly derivative of Tokyo Story
What's wrong with that though?
