Not really. Even 10 speed garbage has lower real life MPG, than 6-gang manual.
Only CVTs, Prius transmission and DSG can get fuel consumption comparable to manual.
In CVT, you can get any ratio you want, so it is efficient despite having hydraulics.
DSG has tiny electric driven pump which doesn't waste much fuel on hydraulic pressure, unlike typical automatic.
Prius transmission is basically two electric motors on planetary gear-set.

I'm from Australia, you can get a automatic licesense which excludes you from driving manual cars unless you do another test. Manual licenses let you drive either though.

Well they're not completely different, they're both hatchbacks with a similar shape, ford and mazda used pretty similar, if not the same technology between the two engines. Granted still not a spot on and fair comparison sure, but the differences between both cars aren't that apart.

Automatics used to be less fuel efficient but with modern tech they are equal, or certainly more efficient if you have a CVT like I do in my Prius. I like to drive a manual 80% of the time but, yes, it's much harder to masturbate.
