Yeah I'm a bit of a history nut my world has some magical mumbo jumbo that makes it so different regions have different possible levels of technology. Most of the midwest has ww2/ww1 level teck and industry. With veins of iron age and bronze age teck breaking it apart. Basically there are areas where using swords, shields, muskets, and cannons. Would be more effective than machine guns( mostly because they would function in those places).

the last MMO i played was a fallout 2 mod with real time combat. it was good for a few years, but later updates absolutely killed endgame open world pvp. devs disabled "full inventory drop" on death for every map except for one, essentially removing the risk and thrill of pvp. not very fun when nobody's scared to lose their crafted weapons with 5 stat modifiers fighting for fun

yeah i imagine that's the kind of stuff you'd be into if you like spending a long time with things. i'm the opposite. i need something i can pick up and play for 5 minutes, or 5 hours without having to make some sort of "progress".
i think that when multiplayer games have unlockables/equipment which you can't cheat or load a save to obtain all of, i spend less time on them than i would if i were to have every option available off the bat. i spent a lot of time on ghost in the shell first assault before it got shut down. not normally a FPS player, but that game was a decent cod:mw2 (only shooter i really liked prior to that) clone. the unlockables/currency system wasn't terrible, if only because there weren't many interesting guns to unlock.
