And they downloaded it from Google images. If you right click->save as an image result, you get the checkerboard, because Google renders the thumbs that way

This is wrong, my dude. That only rings true if google images happens to save it as a jpg. This means the background will be white/grey checkerboard.
OP's pic is still a .png with half transparency and half grey boxes.

that's because google thumbnails are riffs and just being saved as .jpg because that's the original files name
