Surrealist Pillow definitely qualifies as experimental music. It was recorded in 1967 and ushered in the psychedelic era. They had a completely different sound than the Stones or Beatles and light years away from the surfing songs or car songs which were still unfortunately popular.

The early stuff was amazing, but he ran out of ideas and sold out like most everyone.

People tend to forget the roads the Pumpkins paved. Much of their music was experimental.
