Yes and no. Nations before WWI were strongly imperialistic... meaning that they wanted to rule big extensions of land as long as those were subjected to the Main Country.

Nationalism is about strong government and culture breeding a happy, healthy and wealthy society. Citizens should share common values, thus socialize more, spend more money, commit less crimes. Strong borders are good to make sure that the population is only growing at a rate that current infrastructure development in a country can accommodate for. A nationalistic government puts the needs of its own people above those of any others which, believe it or not, is what a government is supposed to do. Nationalism, when done right, leads to prosperity not seen in shitholes ridden with cultural guilt and weak borders. Nationalism when done wrong leads to hate and war, if used for nefarious purposes, but good should always triumph in the end since the alternative of no nationalism will just erode your civilization until we're back to every man for themselves.
