GO GO GO

-yo

dont know how and don't really care tbh

Damn... it's been decades since I played. Back in 1976 when I was 16 I was ranked amateur 4-dan and studying with the two strongest players in the Americas. That was my peak though. tried for 5-dan several times and couldn't get there.

Card games are more exciting.

A sack of potatoes enters the thread. Pay no attention to it! It is of no importance!

Sure you can.
Truly the finest game ever played. Worth a shot.
4 dan! Bravo. That's strong, especially in the 70s. The community is as alive as ever, brother.
On average perhaps, but go has much more to offer.
Disregarded.

Ive been thinking about making a general on /tg/ like there is for chess once in a while, but I doubt it will stick.

What is this game? Looks interesting.

Is this game fancy othello? Give me a retards summary of the differences.

Doesn't hurt to try!

Are you on Kik? I'd like to ask some basic questions.

The finest game under heaven. Rules are incredibly simple, but strategy is unfathomably complex. Black and White alternate placing stones on a 19x19 grid with the objective of surrounding the most amount of area on a board.
Sorry, I'm not. I'd be happy to talk go on here for a while yet, though. I'll be more attentive to the thread.

Yeah true enough. Maybe I will.

Wasn't go basically solved by a computer?

Not a chink

Too busy playing riichi mahjong, the superior Japanese grandma game

No, although computers can finally beat the best human players. The game is harder than chess.

nobody to play with

Solved, no, but made to excel past top pros? Yes. It's brought in some exciting new ideas and challenged old ones that literally havent been challenged in thousands of years. It's an era of experimentation and AI influenced openings at the pro level. Very fun to watch unfold.
Obv. I'm promoting go in the West here. Give it a shot.
I played that a few times. It strikes me as tactically awkward rummy with obnoxious, made up scoring. I see weebposters playing some anime mahjong on Yea Forums. Looks pretty fun. I'd like to learn how to really play.

because I've been having too much fun playing shogi. And anime tells me that's where all the lolis are.

(seriously, Go is sooooo deep. I wish I had started learning it when I was in grade school. I'm only 10-kyu and I doubt I'm going to get any stronger at my age.)

Because the machine already won.

>On average perhaps, but go has much more to offer.
It doesn't. Card games have infinite possible combinations as new cards are created.

Oof I know that feel. I got lucky that I was able to restart a fairly active go club in me town. Having people to play irl makes getting into the game much easier. That said, come play on OGS. You'll find a game.
Man I would love to learn how to play shogi. And Xiangq.
That's silly. Nobody stopped playing chess when Deep Blue beat Kasparov. Nobody stopped Starcraft/Dota when Deepmind's AI casually dabbed on pros.

All yet shallow compared to the rich elegance of go.

but if I get bored with shogi, I'll go back and re-read that old seven volume series from Ishi Press to see if I get anything more out of it now that I'm older and wiser.

That's a subjective opinion.

I don't play go cause AI serves that purpose far better than me.

Hikaru no Go may offer you a similar experience.
It is hard to measure quality, isn't it.
Might as well kys now with that attitude. :/

I won't have to kms, the AI will be better at killing me than me soon ^^

But ya I lied I actually want to learn go, looks like fun.

>It is hard to measure quality, isn't it.
Since there can be no objective measure.

I cannot best the machine. There is only one course of action left.

Why aren't you playing pokemon go to the polls?

I recommend American Go Association's website or OGS for tutorials and such. It is very satisfying to play, even if you don't focus your life on it.
Pat the cat?
Ya lost me.

die

Because there are better modern boardgames like Castles of Burgundy or Artic Scavengers that I'd rather be playing. Century spice road, evolution, fairy tale, the list goes on and on.

Fucking really?
Aight then
Fine games all, but marred with too many pieces, rules, designs, obscurity. Appropriate for a party, but not to dedicate one's time as they should for a hobby.

Never played physical game of Go, but I enjoyed the fuck out of the Hikaru no Go anime & manga. Made me try the game out online, I was ass though lol

Go is like chess, it's a two player strategy game with rankings and learned strategies and responses. You're not learning anything new, you're just refining autism and nobody is impressed with your fedora typing ranking except maybe other go players.

I love that 1000 years of strategy memes were dumped on their head by an AI and now the best players are emulating the AI, in other words it's not a game of creativity and intelligence, it's a game of emulating strategy. It's deep alright, deeply autistic.

>but not to dedicate one's time as they should for a hobby.
*tips fedora*

Autism is the new gay. Almost no one is using it correctly anymore.

Right because if anything had more that two pieces and isn't played back to back to back ad infinitum it must suck. I know gamers like you and I get why go would be attractive, it's both rote and repetitive.

Except people on the spectrum do actually really excel at both chess and go.

Used to. Then my gf kicked me out and tossed my board.

Yeah but it's still pretty impressive to kick ass at chess and go.

The gamut of skill in go is significantly greater than that of chess. Everybody is ass when they start out. Except Koreans, apparently.
>not learning anything new
lmao
A thousand years of strategy memes were most certainly not dumped on their head. There were some wild openings introduced, but very large number of joseki were totally used by a completely self taught neural network. Thousands of years of strategy were in fact utterly validated.
I regret nothing.
That's a fair point, but go is still the better game.
It's a focus thing, I think.
Shake the correlation and get back on the horse.
Hell yeah, if a little niche.

literally have no idea what it is or how it's played

I'd rather be going to play

I've only ever played online go without chat. How's the community? No offense but a lot of the people I see that play go are pretty pretentious.

It's not though, it comes down to who studied more, albeit there is an intelligence cap you aren't just good you have to study either game. And its not fun nor impressive to just constantly curb stomp anyone below your rank.

But that doesn't make everything and everyone autistic. Not every single autistic person is Rain Man. And, not every person who excels at something like Go is autistic. Autism isn't super-smarts.

Like you said, people on the spectrum can excel at things like Go, something that requires a ton of memorization and decision-making. The key sentiment there is, "people on the spectrum". It's a very specific part of the spectrum. If you just aim randomly at the spectrum, you'll get the kind of autism that tells you 3+3=11 through convoluted rationalizations and steps.
>inb4 autism
It's like saying tying your shoe is autistic.

Because Street Fighter is the ultimate game and, frankly, the only one worth playing.
Forces the user to build strategy but also emphasizes reaction timing. You have to study the game for YEARS just to get kinda good at it, but once you do, it's worth it.

Because I don't know what the fuck that is.

*shrug*

something like chess but for chinks and 1000000 times more complicated

I can see where you're coming from. I probably can be categorized as such, too. I can't justify or explain why. It has something to do with nobody knowing what it is, yet necessarily having to describe the game as fucking incredible. Communities are alright in the West, all things considered. There are a few forums and servers each with pros and cons. Nothing beats local club play, though.
The beauty of rank disparity in go compared to literally any other board game is that there is a very fair, accessible handicap system that still keeps games interesting for both players. If played with correct ranks and corresponding handicap stones, your win/loss will stay right at that 50% mark. No stomps except for brand- fucking-new players. Your grief with "it all comes down to who studied more" is pretty gay, btw.
As a broad generalization, go is more intuition than sheer memory.
I can admire that kind of dedication.
We're all here to learn!
No time like the present. Give it a go.
Yeah basically.

Thanks for the replies, Yea Forumsrothers. Hope you try at least one game. Good night.

That's a very accurate description, friend
