Everything you said in that post is wrong because you’re incorrectly twisting the words “I’m making billions off these tariffs with China” as being a literal statement. Tariffs are not used to make money, they’re used to drive policy.
The policy is “stop US manufacturing giants from building their products in China, and to bring those factories back to the US”.
When he says making billions, he’s mocking the manufacturers for ignoring the easy way to lower their costs: bring their factories back to the US. The IRS is collecting billions of extra revenue due to the tariff, so it is true in a literal sense. Where that money comes from doesn’t matter. But none of that changes the truth: the goal of a tariff like that is to drive manufacturers to change their behaviour such that the IRS makes zero extra revenue from that tariff. It’s not a money making scheme. And it’s not intended to be.

Nah I’m saying that as a way to manage your nations economy in a global market, eradicating huge portions of economic activity to save a buck is detrimental in the long term because eventually you’ll be held to ransom by those nations that embraced the economic skills that you eschewed out of optimistic hope that the rest of the globe gives a fuck about your nation’s ability to buy their products.
An example of this is a thought experiment: imagine if the US did something controversial. Now imagine if China took offence at that and enacted a trading ban with the US. Now where are US companies and the US public going to buy phones, computers, pretty much everything electronic. The US economy as a whole will be held back significantly, right from heavy industry that won’t be able to buy control equipment down to phone shop salespeople who won’t have new phones to sell. It’ll be chaos. With no backup indigenous manufacturing, it’ll take years, possibly decades to return to the same economic activity levels. Same with steel, these days if the US can’t import steel, the economy will be hit. Ditto with oil. That’s why the massive increase in domestic oil production has been such a boon for the economy: secured access to petroleum products without being held to ransom by OPEC; engineering, mining, and other associated jobs, all on-shored to the US; and a lot of other benefits.
It makes a lot more sense to be mostly self sufficient rather than trying to save a buck by importing, on a nation-economy-level scale. Obviously that’s contingent on the products produced domestically being innovative and competitive with foreign imported products, but that’s a given. Allowing domestic innovation & education to dwindle is cancer for an economy.
