Find a nice church in your area, one that follows the Bible (your best bet is a Baptist church, either independent or part of the southern Baptist convention). Pray for guidance in finding a good one, and just go. You don't have to dress up super nice, maybe put on a polo shirt and some nice shorts or pants at least so you're not looking like a total slob, but there's no real dress code. I'll actually be going to a new church tomorrow morning myself, and I'm a little nervous but it'll be fine. Through God all things are possible. I'll pray for you and hope you can find a good church to belong to!

Science does not claim to know everything, or to always be right, and is happy to constantly revise its conclusions based on new evidence. Should any objective reason to believe in organized religion come to light, that would become part of science.

Looking into the transmission of the New Testament (as a document in history) is actually what lead me to salvation in Christ. Even as an atheist as I looked into how we came to have the books of the NT I was convinced that it was preserved better than any other document we have from its time or even ones from later epochs. There are many translations, but really only one version which is attested to by the amalgamation of the many ancient manuscripts we have from the post apostlelic period. Manuscripts closer in time to its original penning than any other ancient historical work we have. Once i was convinced of the surety of its transmission I became open to its "truth claims" and found in it a book that if read in context and with the ability to entertain the possibility of supra-natural world, one that offers no obvious inconsistencies and a world view that has the most explanatory power of any that I have encountered. It takes time to understand any document let alone an ancient one from another civilization. I find those that claim inconsistencies to be found in the text, simply to have a surface level understanding of the books or the people from which they came. And are simply reacting to the different set of presuppositions that religious people and natural materialists have. If anyone is interested in the transmission of the New Testament I encourage you to YouTube "Dr James white, transmission of the New Testament", or read his work "King James Only Controversy" it gives a great, however somewhat technical explanation of the many translations of the NT, thereby giving a great understanding on how scholars are able to be convinced that the work we have today is what was written 2k years ago.

Church has nothing to do with getting on God's good side. I've never been a day in my life but exists to have fellowship with other believers. There is no getting on God's good side because we are all fallen, all sinners.
