Real Starbucks employee here,
Three things:
- our grinder setting matches the drip setting perfectly, plus it's an industrial burr grinder.
- when you make coffee in quantity, the entire batch keeps. There's no head or tail end to the coffee so you get a good proportion overall.
- finally, the default regular coffee is the pike place, which isn't anything special. That's the standard, and people like it.
My advice is this.
Grind your coffee at home, but don't grind it fine. Use the measurement of the package suggestion. Grind only when ready to brew.
Heat the water to boil, remove from stove; wait until it bubbles no more, then brew.
Pour a little at a time through paper filter, and just wait 30 seconds. Then pour the rest to the quantity you measured.
It helps if you pre-heat your coffee cup. The perfect water temperature is just slightly below boiling for coffee. Enjoy.
