So you have thousands of different cultural groups, language groups, identities all under single nations. Any great nation had to go through a unification process to get where it is which involves a lot of genocide civil war and strong arming.
These countries are rich in resources too so with modern globalisation you have everyone and their mum trying to fight for geopolitical control. China's arming these groups, Russia is arming those groups, Saudi Arabia arming this group and the US arming that group. It's just endless. There's a big unification problem. Since colonialism ended there's been a few governments stabilising. Windhoek, Namibia has experienced massive economic and infrastructural growth since declaring independence in the 90s for example. Rural namibians have migrated into the city at great rates looking for jobs and they aren't dealing with civil warfare or outside influence so they'll just keep expanding and growing economically.
There are other places like this, too in Africa. As a country once you get past the warlords and the foreign intervention you're ripe for growth.
That's really been the whole problem. Their last great empire fell in the 1600s (West Africa, the Mali), which is just cycle of civilisation. We don't know why they fell but like the Roman's it was probably over expansion and being stretched too thin and lost the ability to control their satellite settlements. Since then it's been wars, invasions, subjugations, civil wars, and foreign economic interests moving on their shit.
