Trying to think of a word. I believe it begins with R. It's a word that you would use to describe something that has to be carried out, typically in a job, that neither party wants to carry out but is obligated to because it's part of a process.

Not requirement. It's a word for something with a similar definition but both parties know that the process is a waste of time, or a part of a procedure that they're obligated to carry out, even if they feel like they shouldn't have to.

For the record, it might not begin with R. I might be wrong.

Imagine you had to sit down and fill in a ton of paperwork for instance. The guy doing the paperwork knows that the paperwork is unnecessary because he knows you're already overqualified. You would state that you don't mind doing the paperwork, even if it is *. The star is the word I can't think of :(
